Consumer Protection: New Amendments Strengthen E-Commerce Rights

Patel Law Chambers 15 April 2026

The Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules have been significantly amended in 2026, giving online shoppers stronger legal remedies against fraudulent sellers.

The Consumer Affairs Ministry has notified significant amendments to the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, strengthening protections for online consumers. Major Changes: 1. E-commerce platforms must display country of origin on all products. 2. Flash sales designed to defraud consumers are now explicitly banned. 3. Fall-back liability — platform is liable if the seller is untraceable. 4. Grievance officers must respond within 48 hours (down from 30 days). 5. Mandatory display of total price including taxes and delivery charges upfront. Enforcement: The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has been empowered to issue recall orders and penalties up to Rs. 10 lakhs for misleading advertisements. Consumer complaints can now be filed at the District Consumer Forum online. Our consumer law team can assist with e-commerce fraud cases and compensation claims.
